MEET THE ARTIST
JEFFREY JOHNSON
I was born and raised in a small town in south western Wyoming. I dabbled with art as a kid and began taking it seriously in High School. I found that everyone could get the same right answers on a math test but no one could ever draw what I would for an art class assignment. It was then that I decided I wanted to be an artist. I was intoxicated by the individuality and authenticity we can find in creative pursuits like drawing and painting. I went to college for art, eventually receiving a B.F.A in Studio Art and Art History. After graduating I built a small art studio and woodwork shop. Over the next few years I worked on paintings and custom frames as much as possible while working side gigs to make ends meet. During those first few years I was able to teach a Two-dimensional Design course at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction Colorado. Teaching taught me a great deal but I was more interested in applying what I learned than continuing to teach it. In 2016 Arlo DiCristina offered me a tattoo apprenticeship in exchange for helping him get what is now Elysium Studios up and running. For a year and a half we juggled remodeling and construction projects and everything else involved in getting a new business started. When our space was ready he got me started tattooing. It was extremely exciting when I first picked up a tattoo machine and started figuring it out. Since then learning and refining my skills in tattooing has been my primary focus but I paint and do wood work whenever I can make the time. Going forward I am focusing on integrating my other art forms into my tattooing. I have tattooed my past drawings and hope to create paintings that can become tattoos in the future.
